Your K-State alumni club, the Kansas State Texans, is pleased to announce the winners of our 2017 club scholarships:
2015 marks the 14th consecutive year that our club has awarded scholarships to DFW-area high school seniors to use in their freshman year at K-State. With our alums’ support, we have gone from awarding two $500 scholarships in 2002 to being able to give three $3000 scholarships to new Cats this year.

What makes this year really special is the exponential growth in both amount of each scholarship and the number awarded! Back in 2002, we awarded our first two scholarships of $500 apiece. Over the years, we’ve held events and sold our Lone Star Powercat sportswear and plowed all of the proceeds back into that account. Last year, we were thrilled to award three scholarships of $3000@. So you can image how over the moon we are, to award ten scholarships of $5000@! What changed? The first annual North Texas Wabash Cannonball, which was held on May 19 at the Marriott Las Colinas, that’s what. Due to the generosity of those who attended, we can help local parents make a real dent in the out-of-state tuition differential and other costs.
I’d also like to recognize the our executive team of volunteers and the recently formed social committee, who are working to organize and host events that will continue to grow our endowed scholarship fund and provide you with opportunities to mix and mingle with your fellow Cats! We are thankful to Mike and Gloria Konold for many years of organizing the spring golf tourney, which has historically been our primary fund-raiser. Mike and Glo are leaving town, but the golf tourney is in the capable hands of Doug Ekstrom who has been working the spring and fall tourneys for many years. We appreciate Ted Settle of Sportswear Graphics in Fort Worth who designed our very cool club logo and continues to fulfill your orders for the Lone Star Powercat tees, hats, pins and flags that are a surefire conversation starter. Carol Cook Stiffler is hands-on at nearly every event and does an amazing job of assisting our Dallas-based KSU admissions rep by organizing alum volunteers to help staff tables for college nights held at all of the DFW-area high schools. Lauren Halsey keeps our social media fresh and has a new helper, in Alyssa Pauly. Les Platz is the webmaster who keeps our site up and running (and selling those cool club collectibles)! We also appreciate Dart Forst at Maxsys Solutions for being a repeat sponsor of our website and the Cat Scoop. As football season nears, there are a bunch of cool Cats who are planning to host watch parties at locations around the area so that you can watch the game with Cats fans (in case you can’t make it to BSFS or the road games). Many of these folks are repeat hosts, including Amber & Cody Wiens, Dennis & Sharon Tobin, the co-owners of Eastwood’s (Dan Hunt, Chris Johnson and Andy Machant) and more! The social committee of Shawn King, Valerie McKenzie, Carrie Condry, Marla Payne, Lauren Halsey and Alyssa Pauly are coming up with fresh ideas for events that will appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests.
We are so appreciative of those of you who help us keep the purple pride alive here in the heart of Texas! Thank you!
